After 28 years, the dance music specialists from France have announced they are splitting up. They chose a typical video to make the announcement called “Epilogue”.
Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo were dressed in the video in their memorable robot costumes – they said goodbye in the desert and then one of them exploded. The band represented the underground house scene in France having formed in Paris in 1993.
Their worldwide hit single ‘Get Lucky’ proved a great success featuring Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams.
Album “Random Access Memories” won the Grammy for album of the year in 2014. They have kept themselves in the background since then, although they have worked with high profile acts such as The Weeknd. They were rarely seen out in public and when they were the robot head protection would keep them hidden. By using computerised vocals their voices have also remained protected. They say themselves that they are not models or performers claiming robots are more exciting to humans than their real bodies.
The duo met when they were at school in Paris and started with some raw garage rock songs, but they quickly evolved into a punky dance sound. When they sampled David Bowie’s Starman, it moved them in the direction of their robot sounding vocals. Their first Daft Punk song took place in a Disneyland Paris rave. There was a race to sign them up which was eventually won by Virgin Records. The band remained anonymous behind their costumes, letting their music project everything they wanted to the rest of the world.
Goodbye Daft Punk we will miss you!!!
