Cillian Murphy wins Golden Globe after walking on the stage in Beverly Hills to accept the award on Sunday night, the actor from Cork said: “Oh boy… The first question is: do I have lipstick all over my nose? I’m going to leave it.”
In his speech Murphy paid tribute to “visionary director” Nolan “for having faith in me for 20 years and six feckin’ pictures”.
He also congratulated the “incredible ensemble cast” for “carrying me and holding me through this movie”.
Murphy has starred since 2013 as Thomas Shelby in the BBC television series Peaky Blinders, a series about gangsters in Birmingham during the post-World War I period. Murphy was not initially picked for the role by director Steven Knight, who also met Jason Statham to discuss the role. Knight said in a later interview, “Cillian, when you meet him, isn’t Tommy, obviously, but I was stupid enough not to understand that”. He decided on Murphy for the part when receiving a text from Murphy that stated, “Remember, I’m an actor”. In an interview with The Independent, Murphy said “[The scripts] were so compelling and confident, and the character was so rich and complex, layered and contradictory. I was like, ‘I have to do this.'” Peaky Blinders was very popular and received rave reviews. In October 2014, a second series began and by 2019 season 5 was broadcast.
