In the unusual surroundings of a virtual awards ceremony, Nomadland was a big winner. Not only did it pick up the Best Picture (Drama) but also Best Director for Chloe Zhao.
What makes the award for Chloe Zhao really stand out is the fact that she was only the second woman ever to win this award after Barbra Streisand in 1983.
While Frances McDormand was also nominated for Best Actress for the same movie, the award actually went to Andra Day – a performance TrendInMusic wrote about this week from the movie The United States vs Billie Holiday.
Moving to TV the biggest winner overall was The Crown. Under the Drama category it won best TV Series, Best Actress (Emma Corrin), Best Actor (Josh O’Connor) and Best Supporting Actress (Gillian Anderson).
This was the 4th Season of the series which has been both praised as well as criticised for its accuracy of some events. There is a good example with the relationship between The Queen and Mrs. Thatcher. Scenes where they criticised each other or guessed what each others actions might be would have been fictional and totally against the official protocol between a Monarch and Prime Minister. There is no doubting the demand, however, for any material behind the scenes of The Royal Family.
Final mention of another TV series performing well, this time in the Best Musical or Comedy Section. The series is Schitts Creek which completed 6 series and picked up Best Series and Best Actress (Catherine O’Hara).
The series follows a wealthy family (two parents and two adult spoiled children) who lost their fortune. Their only remaining asset is a small town (Schitt’s Creek) which was bought as a joke birthday gift. They move to the town and rebuild their lives in a run-down motel.
