A warning for the Oscars ceremony appearing just over the horizon – the ratings for the Golden Globes were disastrous!

There were 18.3 million viewers for the 2020 event, while it fell to just 6.9 million this year. This makes it their least watched ceremony ever. While award show ratings have dropped generally during the pandemic. for example the Emmys, the percentage drop for the Golden Globes was by far the worst.

While the Oscars and Grammys have their own unique audiences, they still have a reason to be nervous. The Globes failure has hit hard given the high amount of promotional investment from NBC as well as the return of the popular hosts  Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. 

It was also thought that the recent  investigation by the Los Angeles Times which questioned whether the awards were legitimate as well as the lack of diversity among those who cast the votes. The previous lowest viewing figures were 14.9 million which coincided with the writers strike, so clearly on this occasion there were a number of factors for the drop with Covid having the biggest impact.
