The movie is based on the super popular video game and is actually the third version in a live action format. It will have no connection, however, to the 1995 and 1997 versions. Director Simon McQuoid has his own ideas and incorporates some of the game fans favourite features especially finishing off characters in the most bloody way possible.
Many of the characters most loved in the games make an appearance in the movie.
The characters include Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Brooks as Jax Briggs, Josh Lawson as Kano, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Elissa Cadwell as Nitara and Daniel Nelson as Kabal, and Max Huang as Kung Lao.David Callaham, also currently working on the “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” sequel, is the screenwriter for the 2021 “Mortal Kombat” movie.
Release is planned for April 16th both on HBO Max and in cinemas and is part of HBO’s streaming strategy announced last year.
“Mortal Kombat” the game was originally released in 1992, and has been through many releases. The most recent version is 11 which was released in 2019, this featured existing and new characters.
